For a complicated topic, it’s pretty simple: people of faith believe that the universe was formed by intelligent design; scientists believe in randomness. Right?
Actually, astrophysicist Jeff Zweerink will help your congregation and community discover the similarities in the thinking of Christians and scientists in regards to the “ingenious design” of the universe.
With continuing advancements in technology, Dr. Zweerink says there is growing “evidence for a finely tuned and divinely created universe.”
Looking for evidence? Dr. Zweerink points to:
- The four fundamental forces in the universe
- The composition of the universe
- The number of space dimensions
“All of which are supportive of the biblical creation event,” he says. “If just one of these forces did not appear at the just-right time, the universe — and life as we know it — would not exist.”
This evidence has helped scientists, including some atheists, come to a belief that there is a purpose behind creation. As astrophysicist Paul Davies, an atheist states, “The laws (of physics) … seem to be the product of exceedingly ingenious design. … The universe must have a purpose.”
Encourage the people of your church and your community to get a better understanding of the purpose behind the universe in the next installment of the Reasons to Believe series.
Dr. Jeff Zweerink is a Scholar with Reasons to Believe. He is passionate about understanding how the worlds of science and Scripture can be integrated. Having earned his Ph.D. in astrophysics from Iowa State University, he was a full time Physics and Astronomy Research faculty member at UCLA before joining Reasons to Believe. He still is part of the UCLA research faculty, on a part-time basis. His specialty is high-energy gamma-ray astrophysics. Dr. Zweerink began his fascination with gamma rays — messengers from vastly distant black holes and neutron stars — while a graduate student. He enjoys helping others bridge the perceived science-faith gap. |
